Cafe Viriato is a small, family-run Portuguese café nestled on South Street in Epsom, just a short stroll from the Playhouse Theatre and the town centre. It’s the kind of spot locals swing by for their morning coffee or a quick bite, making it a regular part of daily routines rather than a destination café experience.

The atmosphere here echoes that of a traditional village coffee shop in Portugal, offering a relaxed and unpretentious vibe. You’ll find the owners warmly welcoming guests, which gives the space a genuine community feel rarely found in busier chain cafés. The café’s charm lies in its authenticity, from its strong, well-crafted espressos to the pastry selection — with the egg tarts standing out as a particular favourite.

Cafe Viriato suits anyone looking for a cosy spot to grab a solid coffee and a sweet or savoury Portuguese treat, especially during weekday mornings or early afternoons. It tends to attract a mix of early risers stopping by for their caffeine fix and theatre-goers seeking a quick, satisfying snack before or after a show.

Besides coffee, the café often serves fresh, home-style dishes that change daily, inviting curiosity for regulars who enjoy a different flavour each visit. The availability of wine and beer adds a casual touch, making it comfortable even for a relaxed mid-day pit stop rather than a formal sit-down meal.

Given its location just a few doors away from local cultural points, Cafe Viriato comfortably fits into Epsom’s neighbourhood rhythm, providing a small slice of Portuguese café life that feels both familiar and a little transportive to visitors and locals alike.

Family run and welcoming Portuguese cafe, usually serves a fresh dish each day. Go on a Friday or traditional salted cod. Also serves wine and beer and possibility the best expressos and egg tarts in town.
